About the eblacks
Electronic Sports also known as e-sports may be regarded by some as an unconventional sport, however over the past decade e-sports have grown at an exponential rate. The gaming industry now rivals the movie industry; this has allowed for more competitions, sponsorship and prizes much like what is seen in any professional sport. Generally the easiest way to compete in these e-sports is over the internet, but the real talent is shown over Local Area Networks (LANs). Major gaming events are held yearly for thousands of individuals to show how good they really are on an international stage.
The World Cyber Games Grand Final is the largest of these gaming events, in 2008 74 different countries did attend the Grand Final in Cologne, Germany with a total prize pool of over 2.5 million dollars (US). However not all LAN events are on such a grand scale as the WCG, in New Zealand there are dozens of LAN events each year were hundreds of competitors battle it out on the electronic battlefield. Check out the events the eblacks participate in on the events page. For a comprehensive list of all LANs in NZ, look here.
In any sport representing your county at an international level is the highest achievement. This is no different for electronic sports. In New Zealand this honour goes to the eblacks, every year players at the top of their game are selected to become eblacks, where they represent New Zealand at many different international events, including the WCG Grand Final. This year at xLAN - the host for the WCG NZ Qualifiers, 14 talented individuals became eblacks. Click here to see who they were.
